Rejoice: How to Embrace Joy This Advent

Embracing Joy: Preparing for Christmas

Imagine that night, shepherds in the fields, tending their sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appears, shining with the glory of God. They were afraid, but the angel reassured them: “Don’t be afraid! I bring good news of great joy for all people. Today, in Bethlehem, the Savior has been born! You’ll find him wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:8-12)

A few years ago, I visited Bethlehem and stood at the very site where those ancient shepherds heard the angel’s message. It struck me how much this place reminded me of the scenic beauty of New Mexico. But more than that, I realized this moment marked a turning point in history.

Looking around, I wondered what the shepherds felt that night — the wonder, the awe, the excitement. I can’t fully imagine what that special moment was like.

Many of us are busy preparing our homes and hearts as Christmas approaches. This season is a time of joy, reflection, and hope. The Advent season, observed worldwide, is about waiting for Jesus’ birth, for divine promise fulfilled. It’s a celebration of the gift that God gave us in Jesus, reminding us of divine love and hope.

Joy as a Gift from God

When you hear “joy,” what comes to mind? Perhaps cheerful moments during Christmas — laughter with family, the sparkle of decorations, or the warmth of shared stories. But for believers, joy goes deeper. It’s not a fleeting emotion but a deep, lasting sense of delight rooted in the knowledge that God loves us so much He sent Jesus to be our Savior.

Joy isn’t something we chase after artificially; it’s a gift we receive when we draw closer to God. Like hope, peace, and love, joy is part of our spiritual relationship with Him — available to us as we trust and grow in faith.

Choosing Joy

While joy is a divine gift, it’s also a choice we make. Life’s challenges — stress, setbacks, worries — can dim our spirits. But even amid difficulties, we can choose joy.

Choosing joy means intentionally focusing on gratitude and goodness. It might be enjoying a cup of hot chocolate with a friend, a heartfelt hug from a loved one, or the beauty of nature’s change. When we recognize and appreciate these simple blessings, our hearts become more joyful.

Advent is a perfect time to practice this. As we light each candle on the wreath, we reflect on what brings us happiness — whether it’s cherished family traditions, the story of Jesus’ birth, or the laughter filling our homes. Focusing on the joyful moments helps us stay grounded and hopeful during challenging times.

Developing a Joyful Mindset for Resilient Faith

Cultivating joy doesn’t just make us feel good — it strengthens our faith. A joyful outlook makes us resilient, enabling us to face life’s obstacles with hope and courage. When hardships strike, recalling moments of joy and remembering God’s faithfulness can shift our perspective from fear to trust.

This positive outlook nurtures hope and peace, helping us endure tough times with a sense of divine presence. During Advent, engaging in prayer, reading the biblical story of Jesus’ birth, attending worship, and serving others all deepen our joy and empower us to stay hopeful.

Action Steps to Embrace Joy During Advent

Gratitude Journaling

Each day, write down three things you’re thankful for. This helps you see the blessings around you and cultivates a joyful attitude.

Savor Simple Moments

Enjoy life’s small pleasures — a warm drink, holiday decorations, or time with loved ones. These moments remind us of what truly matters.

Engage in Festive Activities

Bake holiday treats, sing favorite Christmas songs, and decorate cookies with family. Creating joyful memories fills your heart with happiness and light.

You’ll find joy blooming throughout your Advent season by intentionally practicing these habits. Let your happiness shine brightly!

In Conclusion

As we journey through Advent, remember: joy is a gift from God — freely given to all. But waiting passively for joy to arrive isn’t enough. We are called to choose joy, even amid hardships, by focusing on gratitude and connection with God.

A joyful mindset builds resilience, fuels our faith, and helps us flourish in joyful and challenging times. Let’s resolve to embrace joy this Christmas season. May our hearts be open to the divine gift of faith-strengthening joy, guiding us into a season filled with hope, love, and celebration.

As we await Jesus’ birth, let’s fill our lives with joy — a gift that we can share with loved ones and everyone around us.
