Becoming a Man of Peace: The Second Sunday of Advent

The Second Sunday of Advent: Embracing Peacemaking as a Man of God

by John Thurman

Advent is a special time when we prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth. It’s a moment to reflect on the meaning of His coming and the gifts He offers us. During the second week of Advent, we focus on peace, symbolized by lighting the Peace Candle. This candle reminds us of the peace Jesus brings. Today, I want to encourage men to consider how they can become peacemakers.

Many people find Christmas stressful rather than peaceful. With family events, gift shopping, parties, and church activities, it’s easy to forget the season’s true meaning. Lighting the second candle helps us step back, reflect, and remember that Jesus promises us peace—and He is that peace (Ephesians 2:14).

Jesus emphasizes peace throughout the Bible. In John 14:27, He says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” This experience isn’t just a feeling for moments but a lasting force that brings hope and strength, no matter what we face.

Let’s look at three kinds of peace:

  1. Inner Peace:

The peace Jesus gives runs deep inside us. When life gets tough, this peace keeps us steady. Many chase success through money or status, but true peace comes from a relationship with Christ. It makes us feel calm and content regardless of circumstances.

  1. Peace in Relationships:

Jesus encourages us to promote harmony. As men, we often lead in our families and workplaces, so fostering peace is essential. Resolving disagreements with understanding, patience, and kindness strengthens our bonds. Matthew 5:9 says, “Blessed are the peacemakers,” showing how our actions can build stronger relationships.

  1. Peace with God:

The core of Advent is reconnecting with God through Jesus. He heals our broken relationship with God, freeing us from guilt and shame. For men, understanding this divine peace builds confidence and faith, reminding us that we are loved and accepted by God.

Men as Peacemakers:

Men are not just recipients of peace; they are called to be its protectors. We are responsible for maintaining peace in our homes and communities by following Christ’s example. Peace involves moral courage: creating environments where peace can flourish, resolving conflicts, and leading with integrity.

Leading by Example:

In a world often quick to anger, men can be powerful role models by handling conflicts calmly and respectfully. Showing patience, strength, and respect in interactions sets a positive example, especially for children. When we calm disputes and communicate clearly, we inspire others to follow suit.

Open Communication:

It can be tempting to be tough and hold in feelings, but open conversations build trust and understanding. Whether talking with family or colleagues, honest dialogue helps prevent misunderstandings and strengthens bonds.

Resolving Conflict:

Every relationship faces disagreements. Jesus teaches us to address issues with love and respect, practicing forgiveness and compassion. These qualities are essential for maintaining peace.

Peace and Resilience:

A key benefit of Christ’s peace is resilience—the ability to recover from hardships. Men often face pressures to be strong, so cultivating inner peace gives us strength.

Peace as Resilience:

The peace Jesus provides builds emotional and spiritual strength, helping us endure tough times with hope.

Staying Calm in Crisis:

Christ’s peace enables us to remain calm and clear-headed during stressful situations. This allows us to lead wisely and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

Hope as a Foundation:

Trust in God’s promises gives us hope, which supports resilience. Hebrews 6:19 compares hope to an anchor for our soul, keeping us steady through uncertainty.

Practical Steps for Men

As we reflect on this second Sunday of Advent, here are simple ways men can embrace peace:

  1. Develop a Quiet Time:

Set aside moments each day for prayer, Bible reading, or quiet reflection to connect with God and find inner peace.

  1. Be Vulnerable:

Share struggles with trusted friends or mentors. Asking for help isn’t weakness—it’s a step toward healing and peace.

      3. Improve Conflict Skills:

Practice listening, communicating honestly, and resolving disagreements calmly. These skills promote harmony.

  1. Create Peaceful Spaces:

Be intentional about fostering respect and positivity at home, work, and social settings. Small actions can make a big difference.

Conclusion

As we light the Peace Candle this Advent, remember it’s a call for men to embrace their roles as peacemakers. We honor the season’s spirit by trusting in Jesus’ peace, showing strength through self-control, and seeking peace in all areas of life. In a world full of chaos, strive to be a man who stands firm in faith, demonstrates resilience, and spreads peace. You can help build peaceful communities and lasting change with hope and trust in Christ. Embrace this challenge, knowing His peace is the foundation for true and lasting harmony.
